Statutory Sick Pay extended to cover very high-risk employees

The government has amended the SSP regulations again to extend the category of people deemed incapable of working and therefore entitled to SSP.  This now includes:

  • Those defined in public health guidance as extremely vulnerable and at very high risk of severe illness from COVID-19 because of an underlying health condition
  • Who have been advised by a notification sent to them, in accordance with that guidance, to rigorously follow shielding measures for the period specified in the notification

As with other employees absent for Covid-19 reasons, these employees will be entitled to SSP from the first day of absence.
