The government last night announced that employees returning from family leave over the coming months will be eligible for furlough. The 10 June deadline for furloughing staff who have not previously been furloughed will not apply to them.

The government has confirmed the 10 June deadline will not apply to those returning from maternity, paternity, adoption, shared parental and parental bereavement leave. However, the exception will only apply where the employer has previously furloughed employees, so it will not be possible to furlough just those returning from family leave.

The government imposed the 10 June deadline when announcing changes to the furlough scheme and the introduction of flexible furlough from 1 July.
