Changes to the Life in the UK Test are expected to take effect in the autumn.
The Life In The UK Test is taken by all foreign nationals who are looking to settle or become British citizens. The test was introduced by the Labour Government in 2005 and was intended to ensure that individuals who became British Citizens had knowledge of the practicalities of daily living in Britain.
At the start of July 2012, the national media reported that the Home Secretary, Teresa May, was intending to change the test. The reports suggested that the test would be modified to have less focus on practical issues and more focus on British History, with migrants having to learn the first verse of the national anthem before they can become British citizens. Modifications to the test are anticipated to take effect in the autumn.
The detail of the exact changes to this test are yet to be released but are likely to add to the difficulty in obtaining indefinite leave to remain for some applicants.
