Updated CCTV Code of Practice Published
The Information Commissioner has published an updated data protection code of practice for surveillance cameras.
The new code reflects advances in surveillance technologies since the CCTV code was last updated in 2008 and explains the data protection issues that users of this type of equipment need to understand. It provides good practice advice for those involved in operating CCTV and other surveillance camera devices and recommendations on how the legal requirements of the Data Protection Act 1998 can be met. A key requirement is for a thorough privacy impact assessment before deploying such technology.
The code also includes an expanded section explaining how data subject access requests should be dealt with. This is intended to address concerns expressed during a consultation on the code that further clarification of the law in this area was needed.
